Downtown Organization Embraces Harris Hill Tradition
Torch Parade with Former and Current Jumpers and Pepsi Toast
Ticket to Rewards Program for Ticket Holders
Feb. 6, 2009
BRATTLEBORO, Vt—The Harris Hill Ski Jump Committee and Building a Better Brattleboro have partnered on a community celebration and value added downtown campaign as part of the grand re-opening of the Harris Hill Ski Jump. In a nod to the Olympics torch-bearing tradition, Building a Better Brattleboro has organized a glowing torchlight relay for Friday, February 13 on Main Street in Downtown Brattleboro. Former and current jumpers will “pass the torch” from one to the other as they walk from the Transportation Center on Elliott Street and turn up Main Street to the River Garden. Mount Snow is supplying the torchlights that are safe for outdoor events.
The parade will start at the top level of the Transportation Center on Elliott Street and continue north on Main Street to the River Garden. Half of Elliott Street and the north side of Main Street will be closed to traffic from 5:15 – 6:15 p.m. The parade will be led by a Brattleboro Fire Truck. Spectators will be handed sparklers to add to the celebration.
The parade will end at the River Garden where a Pepsi Toast and special announcement will take place. “We encourage folks to come downtown for the torchlight parade and to greet these incredible athletes prior to the big weekend, says Andrea Livermore, Executive Director of Building a Better Brattleboro. The Torchlight parade will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. (or when it becomes dark).
Among the former jumpers participating in the relay are -- Hugh Barber, who retired the Fred Harris Winged Ski Trophy in 1974 winning the event three years in a row (1972–74); Dana Sprague, former jumper and Harris Hill historian; Dana Zelanakas, teacher at Brattleboro High School, who was on the US Olympic Team and participated in the Sapporo Olympics in 1972; Dr. Phil Dunham “The Flying Dentist” who is a multiple Masters National Champion; Wendy Randall, who jumped from 4th grade to senior year in high school who says she “only rode the landing at Harris Hill,” and Drew Richards, former member of the US Ski Team; “Tink” (Richard) Austinwho’s been jumping since he was 5 or 6 yrs. old and jumped until 1955. He remembered the Junior Team going on overnight trips to Bear Mountain and Lake Placid that cost $10 for room and meals! Also in attendance at the River Garden will be Terry Tyler, who started jumping with a very old pair of skis when he was 12 and fell many times. Alan Sargent took him under his wing and got him his first pair good skis. He jumped in Class B and C but never made it to Class A. After the War he built Maple Valley Ski Jump.
Current jumpers participating include 16-year-old Spencer Knickerbocker from Brattleboro, a top junior jumper and Willy Graves from Putney, a member of the U.S. Ski Team, along with approximately 20 jumpers who will be competing on the weekend. Harris Hill is a longtime symbol of pride for the Brattleboro community. This event brings thousands of fans from the Northeast for this two-day ski jumping competition.
“In addition to honoring former and current jumpers, we also want to encourage folks to browse our downtown and enjoy some shopping,” reports Livermore. BaBB has created a “Ticket to Rewards” program that gives Harris Hill ticket holders special savings at participating downtown stores.
To receive “rewards” ticket holders can present their Harris Hill Ski Jump admission ticket at the register of participating stores from Friday, February 13 through Saturday, February 28.
